I’ve never seen a therapist. Should I go?

Absolutely! You should give it a try at least once. Think about this, if your head hurts, do you think going to the doctor is a bad decision? Well it’s the same for mental health. If you have ever felt sad, doubtful, overwhelmed, depleted, etc., a licensed therapist could help you manage those feelings.  A licensed therapist could help you gain control and feel more balanced within your life. 

I’ve decided to see a therapist, what next?

Congratulations! There are so many layers to making that decision. Congratulations on deciding to see a therapist. Next, make an appointment (include link). Finally, just show up ;-)! 

I set my appointment what should I expect?
First I will give you a positive greeting. It can be very scary and intimidating going to an unknown therapy office for the initial session. I will make sure to welcome you and help you relax. After completing initial paperwork (or complete it prior to the session (link), you and I will meet in a confidential room and discuss some of the issues that have caused you significant stress and discomfort within your life.
What if I don’t like my therapist?
My rule of thumb is to attend 3-4 sessions before you make a decision about me (the therapist). It’s important you have clearly communicated your desires and goals for services. It is also important I have clearly understood you and am able to determine if I can support you. If we are not a good match, I will give you a referral to another therapist.
Will the therapist be able to fix me?
I wish I had the power to “fix” you. Unfortunately, I was not blessed with such a gift. However, I will support you to uncover your truth that can lead to healing. If you are not ready to heal and release some of the burdens that have made you feel uncomfortable, you will continue to feel stuck.

How often should I see a therapist?

It is expected that you will come weekly to work through the presenting issues. However, due to life circumstances such as job flexibility, babysitting, time, costs, etc., some individuals come in bi-weekly. It also depends on the issues you would like support on and the amount of work you are willing to invest in feeling and thinking differently.

Should I bring my spouse/significant other/kids?

If you are coming for marriage counseling, please bring your spouse. If you are coming alone, at some point during your treatment I may strongly suggest bringing or inviting your spouse. Regarding kids, I am not currently working with children under age 16.

How much does it cost?

Individuals-$150+/session
Couples & Families-$180/session
Coaching-$240/session

How long is the appointment?
Therapy sessions are 50-55 minutes.

What if I am late/ missed appointment?

Please give 24-hour notice if you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment. The cancellation fee is the full cost of your appointment if you are not able to give prior notice. If you are late, your appointment will still end on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, your appointment will be canceled and you will be charged for the session.

What’s the difference between counseling versus therapy?

The difference between counselors and therapists is based upon the type of training and scope of practice. You will find that therapists have more specialized training like marriage counseling or marital therapy.
