What Happens in a Coaching Session?

  • Coaching is typically a one to one session that is structured and focused on obtaining outcomes. In a session, there are various topics the individual will want to explore and specific goals to accomplish that will guide the agenda of the coaching sessions. Multiple sessions are needed to track your progress.

    1. Setting Goals-The coach and client work together to determine the goals and objectives to achieve.
    2. Assessing Skills-The coach assesses skills to determine areas of strengths and weaknesses.
    3. Enhancing Skills-The coach works with individuals to enhance their skills set. For instance an individual newly diagnosed with a chronic health condition would work with a coach to learn how to accept the health diagnosis, learn how to navigate the medical system, and make adjustments to their lifestyle.
    4. Building New Skills-The coach and client work together to learn new skills that would support the individual reaching her goals.
    5. Reflective and Active Listening-Coaching sessions include practicing active listening. How to listen and respond in an engaging manner. Coaches model appropriate communication skills that are needed to help the individual reach goals and obtain solutions.
    6. Accountability-Coaches help clients maintain accountability with regularly scheduled meetings to track progress.
